I want to show people that there are no limitations to pursuing what they love – Matt Pevoto
We’ve featured many SideStix users, over the years who love themselves a good Spartan Race. Matt is definitely one of those Spartans. His drive and dedication to Defy Convention not only for himself but for aspiring athletes around him is contagious. We’re very proud to have Matt as an Ambassador for us.
What drives a person to compete in over 14 Spartan Races?
Matt – I want to show people that there are no limitations to pursuing what they love. I race for a lot of people. I’ll give my metals to kids with disabilities, or someone just because I feel like they need it. On a physical aspect, SideStix keeps me going. I had a pair of crutches before I found SideStix and they were really hurting my shoulders very badly. Once I found SideStix with shock absorbers they really helped me and allowed me to go pro in my sport.
How to you train for race day?
Matt – Normally, I do a lot of running during the week either on trails or on the roadside. I will also go to the gym to do weightlifting or I’ll participate in Crossfit. It keeps me pretty active and forces me to figure out how to do things with or without crutches, as I would have to know in the race.
Do you use any particular attachments during the race?
What is your favorite Spartan Race obstacle?
Matt – My favorite would have to be either the monkey bars or the rope climb. I like to climb and hang on to stuff. It really suits me when I get to the race.
What does Defy Convention mean to you?
Matt – There are a lot of limitations that we put on ourselves even if we don’t have a disability. My goal is to show people that there really aren’t limitations, and that you can do anything you set your mind to. I wasn’t supposed to be able to run 15 miles. It didn’t seem like I would be able to as I was growing up. I obviously pushed those limitations and now I do it all the time. I just want to show people that anything is possible.
Do you have a message for other crutch users?
Matt – Don’t let things hold you back. If you need a crutch like SideStix, don’t hold back. Do it. Go for it.
I noticed right away, in my racing career, that I was able to climb and race much faster with good crutches. It really improved my career!
